Sun, Moon and stars through the gates · 1 Enoch 72–79 · Enoch Calendar
72.3 Six gates in the east and six in the west, with windows right and left of them. Sun, Moon and the leaders of the stars all use them.72.6–32 The Sun's year: gate 4 → 5 → 6 → 6 → 5 → 4 → 3 → 2 → 1 → 1 → 2 → 3, thirty days each, thirty-one (the Tekufah) in months 3, 6, 9 and 12. 364 days.72.10–32 Day and night in eighteen parts, from 12 : 6 at gate 6 to 6 : 12 at gate 1, equal at gates 4 and 3.72.5, 78.5 After setting in the west the lights go round through the north to reach the east again.72.7, 75.4 Twelve window-openings in the fourth gate and in the disc of the Sun's chariot.73–74, 78 The Moon rises with the Sun as a new moon, grows by fourteenths to full on the fourteenth day, wanes to nothing, and runs through all six gates each month, lingering seven or eight days at the far gates. Its phase here is the real Moon for the chosen date (astronomy-engine, as on the calendar).74.10–17 The three-, five- and eight-year sums are not animated. Their 5 + 3 split is the Greek eight-year cycle and does not close with 364-day years; Neugebauer reads these verses as a later gloss.75.2 Four leaders of the added days in gates 1, 3, 4 and 6.75.8–9 Chariots above and below the gates in which the stars that never set rotate, and one greater star that goes round the whole world.76 Twelve wind gates at the ends of the Earth, three to a quarter. The four middle gates bring blessing, the other eight punishment.77 The quarters: east the first, south where the Most High descends, west the waning, north in three parts with the Garden of Righteousness farthest.78.1–3 The Sun's names Oryares and Tomases; the Moon's Asonya, Ebla, Benase and Era'e. Equal in size, the Sun seven times brighter.
